Workshop sponsored by ESF, in the framework of the ESF Networking Programme “FUNCDYN: Functional Dynamics in complex Chemical and Biological systems”.

This workshop on experimental techniques is targeted to graduate students and postdocs with limited experimental training in biology laboratory. Students from the non-linear dynamics fields are preferred, but only one student per laboratory group may be admitted.

Experiments to be done during the workshop:

• Genetic variability: AB0 blood group genotyping with saliva by PCR-RFLP.
• Fluorimetric determination of the membrane potential of vesicles.
• Medial and asymmetric cell division.
• Spore purification and resistance assays (the spores to be use are from the non-pathogenic model organism Bacillus subtilis).
   

The selection is in part based on a motivational statement from the applicant. A letter of recommendation from the mentor is desirable but not mandatory. The number of participants in the workshop is limited to 12 and a few places for senior scientists are possible (4).

Each applicant should send an application by e-mail to expworkshop@itqb.unl.pt until the 31 of May 2011.
The application consists of:
1) Personal data, name, address and e-mail. A short paragraph describing the previous experience in the lab.
2) Motivation letter to participate in the school.
3) A letter of recommendation explaining the possible benefits in attending the school (optional).

Final decision will be communicated by the 17 June 2011.

The participation in the school is supported by grants from the European Science Foundation.
Each grant includes:
1) Travel expenses up to 300 euros (original tickets and boarding passes required for reimbursement).
2) Accommodation costs in Hotel Praia Mar, near ITQB, from the 4th to the 10th September 2011.
3) Meals at ITQB during the conference days 5Th-9Th September 2011.
4) Daily, local transportation from ITQB to Hotel Praia Mar.

Arriving at Hotel Praia Mar from the Lisbon Airport:
1) Take the Airport bus to Cais do Sodré railway station (bus terminus, 30 minutes ride, 3.50 €).
2) At Cais do Sodré railway station, take the train to Cascais (train terminus). There are trains every 10 minutes. For a nice view of the coast, take a seat on the left hand side of the train (25 minutes ride, 1.80 €). Drop off from the train at Carcavelos railway station (check in the announcement boards if the train stops at Carcavelos).
3) At Carcavelos station take a Taxi to the hotel, or, walk --- see the map.
