Career award to Hermínia de Lencastre

Lifetime research contribution recognized by Portuguese Society for Microbiology

During Microbiotec11, Hermínia de Lencastre, full professor at ITQB, was awarded the Professor Nicolau van Uden Prize by The Portuguese Society for Microbiology “for her lifetime contributions in the field of Microbiology”.

Professor Nicolau van Uden Prize is attributed by The Portuguese Society for Microbiology (SPM) to award an outstanding researcher for his/her lifetime contributions in the field of Microbiology.

The awarded researcher is nominated, among the scientists that contributed to the development of Microbiology in Portugal, by the Direction Board of SPM. The prize consists of personal diploma and the label of SPM Honorary Member. SPM Honorary Member is the highest honor title attributed by the SPM. The laureate is considered a free-charged life-long membership of the SPM and exempt from the registration fees in meetings organized by SPM.

As head of the Molecular Genetics Unit at ITQB, Hermínia de Lencastre has made extensive and significant contributions to the study of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), the leading cause of hospital infections and a major public health problem.
