Maria Arménia Carrondo to head FCT

Maria Armenia Carrondo, head of the Macromolecular Crystallography Unit at ITQB, is the new president of the Fundação para a Ciencia e a Tecnologia, the Portuguese science funding agency.

A distinguished scientist in the field of protein crystallography with over 150 published articles, Maria Armenia Carrondo is an EMBO member since 2000. She was vice-director of ITQB (1996-2005) and later vice-rector of NOVA University (2007-2013). Throughout her career, she has served in numerous scientific committees and evaluation boards. Among other national and international awards, she received the European Medal for Bioinorganic Chemistry in 2004 and the Premio Camara Pestana 2008.
More recently, she was one of the twenty women scientists portrayed in the exhibition "Mulheres na Ciencia", inaugurated last March at Pavilhão do Conhecimento, in Lisbon.
