PhD Fellowships Plants for Life 2017

The call is now open for seven PhD student positions to the International PhD Program Plants for Life 2017. Applications must be submitted online by October 7 2016 (5 pm - Lisbon time zone).
The PhD Program Plants for Life associates eight European plant research centers devoted to basic research with a strong focus on translating scientific results into agricultural and industrial applications. The Program is funded by Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia and the company Aralab.
More than twenty research laboratories from Instituto de Tecnologia Química e Biológica (ITQB NOVA), Instituto de Biologia Experimental e Tecnológica (iBET), Faculdade de Ciências da Universidade de Lisboa (FCUL), Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência (IGC), Instituto Nacional de Investigação Agrária e Veterinária (INIAV), VIB-Plant Systems Biology-Gent University (VIB-PSB), Max Planck Institute of Molecular Plant Physiology (MPI-PP), and The Sainsbury Laboratory Cambridge University (SLCU) are associated with the Plants for Life PhD Program. After selecting their PhD supervisor(s) among these laboratories, each student will elaborate his/her PhD project.
International PhD Program Plants for Life aims to train world-class researchers in plant sciences able to address key biological questions related to plant growth and development, to plant responses to environmental stress, and to the improvement of crop varieties and plant products.
The PhD Program Plants for Life has a strong emphasis on the individual research project leading to thesis dissertation. The course component corresponds to a total of 20 weeks and focuses on training in core competences in plant sciences and in transversal skills. The program language is English. Supported by their supervisors, students are encouraged to develop their own path within the Program, by selecting additional courses and writing their own project. PhD studies usually last 4 years.
Admission of applicants is competitive, based on their educational background, academic qualifications, track record, and motivation.
Six PhD fellowships (three national and three mixed) will be funded by Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia and there will be one more position (mixed) that will be funded by the company Aralab. Students with a national fellowship must perform most of their research project in Portugal while students with a mixed position can stay up to 24 months in a foreign laboratory associated with the program. Mixed positions are only available for Portuguese citizens.
Aralab is a Portuguese based international company, devoted to high precision climate chambers for Bio research, Pharmaceutical products and Testing segments for academia and the industry. As of this year, Aralab is a partner of Plants for Life PhD program, financing one of the selected candidates throughout his/hers 4 year research project.
