Science for better agriculture

A new project designed to improve the quality of grass peas, in a participatory approach involving research institutes, companies and a municipality has just born.

150 different varieties of grass pea, from Portugal, Spain, Poland, Canada, India, Paquistan, Syria, Afganistan and Iran are being sowed with the commitment of Alvaiázere Municipality, an area with the best conditions for grass pea growth. The species will then be studied regarding their characteristics as food, but also profiling their genetic variability. This will allow choosing the best features of each variety, in an attempt to find the best grass pea for the food industry.

Grass pea (Lathyrus sativus L.) is a robust pulse, with high nutritional value. In Portugal it is part of a traditional heritage in some regions, where they represent an important source of income to some of the local economies. However, due to lack of investment in improving its growth its potential is undervalued and currently in danger. Lack in innovation in its food products and derivatives have also led to a steep reduction in its intake by the population.

This project aims to improve grass pea culture by 2019, joining the best science available to the consumer’s tastes, trying to come up with the best choice. “This will be a challenge, due to a big interaction between all the characteristics, but we are confident in our consortium and in the know-how of our research institutions” says Carlota Vaz Patto, ITQB NOVA researcher and coordinator of the project.
