NOVA Route Zero is the name of the ongoing project that aims to assess when and how NOVA University will be able to ensure its contribution to the ambition of the Paris Agreement, assuming the goal of net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions or climate neutrality. This is the internationally agreed upon target to be achieved by the middle of the 21st century to mitigate global warming. For NOVA, this goal means significantly reducing its direct and indirect GHG emissions and promoting the removal of CO2 equivalent to unavoidable emissions. By July 2025, NOVA Route Zero will equip NOVA (i.e. all its schools) with information to identify when the university will be able to achieve the net-zero target, based on a roadmap of cost-effective actions and respective investment. NOVA Route Zero will also make it possible to identify the main climate risks with a potential impact on normal operations (i.e. classes, research and services), and to identify a roadmap of actions and competences to make NOVA more resilient to extreme weather and climate events. The entire community of NOVA's various schools should follow this project, as it is anticipated that climate neutrality and resilience will have cross-cutting implications that should be understood right away.
