Abstract
It is well established that more than one half of all known enzymes are metalloproteins containing one or more transition metal ions in their respective active site. If the identity of the metal ion determines what chemistry is possible, the protein specifies and controls the chemistry that actually occurs. This exquisite control is crucial for proper biological activity and to achieve a fully understanding of this control has become one of the major goals in the field of Bioinorganic Chemistry.
In this seminar I will present how chemists, inspired by these natural systems, have used different strategies to harness metal ion properties and utilized this knowledge for the development of metal complexes with specific properties.
