Title: Cp*-Functionalized N-Heterocyclic Carbenes: Synthesis, Coordination and Catalytic Applications
Speaker: André Pontes da Costa, Homogeneous Catalysis Lab
Abstract
The easy access to N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) and their potential application in a large number of homogeneously-catalyzed processes, has led to a rapid development in the design of an almost unlimited number of NHC-containing architectures. NHCs are known to be compatible with a wide set of functionalities, including pyridines, alcohols, phosphines, arenes, aryls, ethers, oxazolines, amines and other donor groups.
We envisioned that the functionalization of NHCs with cyclopentadienyl rings might have interesting consequences favouring stability, rigidity and catalytic activity in their metal complexes.
In this seminar, we present the synthesis and characterization of the first Cp*-functionalized NHC and their coordination to Iridium and Rhodium. A series of Cp’-functionalized NHCs along with their coordination to Molybdenum will be reported. The catalytic activity of the Iridium and Rhodium complexes in a variety of hydrogen transfer reactions will be discussed.
