Title: An overview of bioactive molecules in wild mushrooms

Speaker: Isabel C.F.R. Ferreira

Affiliation: Mountain Research Centre, School of Agriculture, Polytechnic Institute of Bragança

Abstract:

The northeast of Portugal is one of the European regions with higher wild mushrooms biodiversity, some of them with important gastronomic value. Besides their excellent nutritional value, mushrooms are also known as functional foods and a source for development of drugs and nutraceuticals. Therefore, it is extremely important to identify and characterize their bioactive molecules. Biomolecules with antioxidant potential (e.g. phenolic compounds, tocopherols, ascorbic acid and β-carotene), low (e.g. quinones, cerebrosides, isoflavones, catechols, amines, triacylglycerols, sesquiterpenes and steroids) and high (e.g. polysaccharides, glycoproteins, proteoglycans and proteins) molecular weight compounds with antitumour potential will be presented and discussed.
