Title: Strategies for resources recovery from wastes - a path towards the circular economy

Abstract: The basic principles of wastewater treatment have remained unchanged for at least one hundred years. Basically, large volumes of water act as vehicle for transporting solids in soluble or particulate form, from their site of production to a centralized wastewater treatment facility, where an energy intensive process takes place. Recovering energy, nutrients and other valuable products embedded in waste and wastewater is the inevitable approach to face the sustainability and equity of future generations. Circular economy principles, will shift the paradigm of materials recycling, products processes and services design, and new business models. This talk at ITQB will focus on the research performed at CEB/UMinho, BRIDGE group, on biotechnology oriented for resource recovery from waste and wastewater streams.
