Title: Assessing the effect of water deficit and heat stress in cork development and suberin deposition.
Speaker: Helena Sapeta
Abstract: The longevity and high activity of the cork cambium in the bark of Quercus suber (cork oak) are the cornerstones for the sustainable exploitation of a unique raw material (cork), highly enriched in suberin. Sub-optimal growth conditions such as drought and heat may affect cork oak growth and thus, cork production, yet fundamental knowledge on the molecular regulation of cork development in this context is still scarce. In this project, we are studying cork development and suberin synthesis as function of temperature/water environmental signals, to uncover and characterize the associated genetic pathways. The data gathered will allow harnessing the genetic heritage of this species for the development of optimized management practices that could maximize plant resilience and productivity.
