Abstract:
Recognizing that utilizing molecular markers are not sufficient to understand or easily handle complex, multigenically regulated traits as e.g. tolerance to abiotic stresses or developmental processes, together with Günter Kahl and colleagues from IBRC, Iwate, Japan and the Charite in Berlin, Germany, Peter developed and patented SuperSAGE whole-genome transcription profiling technology and converted it into a NGS-based tool for the life sciences. The SuperSAGE patent built the fundament of Peter’s company GenXPro GmbH that he founded in 2005 together with Günter Kahl and two young colleagues from Frankfurt. Today, GenXPro provides a wide range of NGS-based and bioinformatics solutions to fields as diverse as cancer research, molecular medicine, toxicology, molecular ecology, pathology and plant breeding to name only a few. Being involved in several national and international projects in plant sciences, GenXPro is developing a plethora of technologies tailored to assist plant breeding to achieve higher yield under adverse conditions faster and more efficient, thus enabling plant biologists and breeders to make better use of existing germplasm and exploit new species for crop improvement. Technologies to be demonstrated include Reduced Complexity Genomic Sequencing (RC-seq) for the rapid generation of high-density genetic maps and mapping of candidate loci, Massive Analysis of cDNA Ends (MACE) enabling to identify the level of expression of a gene of interest and its allelic state at the same time and tools for microRNA sequencing and epigenetic profiling etc. All together and in concert with proven and innovative concepts these technologies enable modern plant biologists to understand the basis of traits and developmental processes in depth and apply this knowledge for practical plant improvement.
