In methanogenic environments organic compounds are degraded by communities of anaerobic bacteria and methanogenic archaea. The role of hydrogen in syntrophic methanogenic communities is well established. The role of formate is less well known, and it even has been often disputed. We study the syntrophic propionate-degrading coculture of Syntrophobacter fumaroxidans and Methanospirillum hungatei. Recent genome information revealed the presence of multiple hydrogenases and formate dehydrogenases in the bacterium and the methanogen. The function of these multiple redox enzymes is discussed.
