Title: Alternative questions to a fish without bones
Speaker: Ana Cristina Paulo
Affiliation: Raquel Sá Leão Lab
Abstract:
Streptococcus pneumoniae is a Gram-positive bacterium comprising over 95 serotypes. It is responsible for a high burden of disease worldwide ranging from otitis media, to pneumonia, bacteremia and meningitis. In 2001, a conjugate vaccine against seven pneumococcal types was introduced for private use in Portugal. This led to major changes in the population structure and its dynamics.
In this seminar I will describe some of those changes using methods applied to macro-ecology (including those used for fish with bones) and discuss its importance to the overall understanding of pneumococcal carriage studies.
