Title: N-Heterocyclic carbenes… What else?
Speaker: Ana Petronilho
Affiliation: Bioorganometallic Chemistry Lab, ITQB
Abstract:
N-heterocyclic carbenes emerged in the last few decades as a class of compounds extremely versatile in catalysis, either as ligands for organometallic compounds or as organocatalysts in their own right. NHCs have been thoroughly studied over the last few years and comprise derivatives of pyridines, pyrazoles, or triazoles, among others. Biologically relevant NHCs, however, are less explored, despite the relevance of N-heterocycles in enzymes and in DNA. Nucleobases, constituents of DNA, are NHC precursors, and in fact carbene have been described as intermediates in the formation of DNA lesions. In this talk we will overview some of the chemistry of NHCs, from synthesis to current applications, and discuss approaches for the formation of NHCs within DNA.
