Title: Are you talking to me? - Looking for new ways to speak "science"

Speaker: Joana Lobo Antunes

From: Science Communication Unit

Abstract:

Newspapers, radios and television desks have been downsizing in the
last few years and with it time and space for science coverage. The
internet has grown to become a powerful tool in global communication,
allowing a bypass of the mainstream media and making room for the
scientists themselves to communicate their work to the public, thus
contributing directly to a public discussion on science.

Within my post doctoral project in Science Communication at ITQB and
FCSH I have started the site “r - ITQB em revista” where three types
of science related articles are to be published: written by me,
written by researchers and written by both. All will have editorial
review by science journalists and communicators. The project will be
further extended outside ITQB and also hosting journalism students
interships in the laboratories, aiming to finding a common language
between science and its translation to lay persons.

While we feed the public’s curiosity towards science related issues,
we also intend to foster the public communication skills of
 scientists
themselves, through a series of courses to be delivered at ITQB.
