Abstract:
In the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae, the Ccc1 transporter plays a critical role, importing iron into the vacuole, which is the major site of iron storage in fungi and plants. It has been shown that Yap5, a Fe-responsive transcription factor, orchestrates CCC1 expression. However, we have recently shown that Yap5-mediated regulation of CCC1 is not essential for cells to overcome Fe-loading. This new finding brings forward the hypothesis that another as yet unidentified regulator is orchestrating CCC1 expression and, consequently, iron storage in yeast.
In this work we have unveiled a novel mechanism of CCC1 regulation. Although the physiological relevance of this mechanism remains unclear, our current data suggest that it has the capacity to play a role in yeast tolerance to iron excess.
