Abstract:
Diverse copper(II) complexes of macrobicyclic ligands (or cryptands) for applications so different as sensors of anions or drugs for diagnostic and therapy of tumours will be presented.
Among several examples, the following cases were selected:
1) A copper(II) complex of a heteroditopic cage, revealed a clear preference for oxalate over other related dicarboxylate anions, arising from cooperativity between metal-anion coordination, electrostatic and hydrogen bonding interactions. A qualitative indicator-displacement study demonstrated that this copper cryptate receptor can be used as a selective visual sensor for oxalate.
2) A hexaamine macrobicycle with pyridyl spacers was able to coordinate three copper(II) ions within its cavity. The trinuclear complex shows a lowering of the pKa of coordinated water molecules to unusual values which in turn allows the capture atmospheric CO2 and its conversion to carbonate, resembling the mechanism of action of carbonic anhydrase. Carbonate is encapsulated, forming a bridge between the three metal centres, as shown by the single crystal X-ray determination. The interesting properties observed for this complex derive from the special architecture of the macrobicycle.
3) Finally, will be presented a series of macrobicycles of small size having especial affinity for copper(II) with potential use as radiopharmatheuticals, which are under study, but some preliminary results of their chemical proprieties will be discussed.
