Title: A tour in (genome) evolution: Evolution in the Galápagos' daisies
Speaker: José Cerca, Norwegian University of Science and Technology
Abstract: Organisms colonizing islands often evolve in peculiar ways. The island syndrome hypothesis states that the novel ecological conditions on islands guide the evolution of extreme habits and morphologies often resulting in "otherworldly species"; thus providing an opportunity to study "extreme cases" of evolution.
The Scalesia group (adaptive radiation) comprises 15 closely related daisy species, which have evolved tree-like and bush-like habits from a single ancestor colonizing the Galápagos. In my talk I will focus on the evolution of the Scalesia group, and offer insights from a genome-evolution perspective. In specific, we have generated a chromosome-level genome assembly (3,200,000,000 base pairs), and found that the genome is comprised of two subgenomes (allopolyploidization event).
