Title: Bacterial oxidoreductases for industrial biotechnology

Speaker: Lígia O. Martins

Affiliation: Microbial & Enzyme Technology Lab, ITQB NOVA

Abstract:

Biocatalysis is a key element for the efficient conversion of renewable resources into industrial chemicals, fuels and energy. Enzymes offer a variety of benefits such as cleaner reactions and increased specificity, with lower energy requirements.

In this seminar I will present our latest achievements in the structure/function characterization and engineering for improved performance of several oxidoreductases from bacterial origin: copper oxidoreductases, flavin-containing oxidases and reductases and heme peroxidases. These enzymes have application in the biodegradation of lignin and other recalcitrant aromatic compounds. The use of the acquired knowledge/tools in the set-up of enzymatic green processes for the production of added-value compounds will be illustrated.
