Title: NMR metabolomics: what is going on at ITQB

Speaker: Luís Gafeira

Affiliation: Cell Physiology and NMR Lab, ITQB

Abstract:

Metabolomics is the study of small compounds, metabolites, present in living organisms and their changes under stimulus. The metabolites can be viewed as the end-points of several biological processes thus representing a reliable fingerprint of the organism status.

Metabolomics analysis involves the generation of metabolic databases based on tissue biopsy or biofluid samples (such as urine, blood, etc.) using high-throughput analytical platforms such as nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy or mass spectrometry (MS) coupled to multivariate statistical analysis. In the last years, several groups at ITQB are developing different NMR metabolomic projects at CERMAX, being an active but yet small community.

This talk will focus in the work developed by our group in the study of cancer resorting to NMR spectroscopy. The methodological aspects as well as the strengths and limitations of the approach will be discussed.
