Title: Novel insights into embryogenesis and secondary growth in forest tree species
Speaker: Célia Miguel
From: Head of Forest Biotechnology Laboratory
Abstract:
A better knowledge on the molecular regulation of embryo development in tree species such as pine could be of great interest to improve the induction of embryos from somatic cells, a process known as somatic embryogenesis which is used for clonal propagation. One of the research lines in the Forest Biotech Lab addresses embryogenesis in maritime pine and part of this work will be presented focusing on a time-course transcriptomic study of embryo development. A second part of the talk will focus on secondary growth which is another ongoing line of research in the lab. Trees go through extensive secondary growth which results from the activity of two lateral meristems, the vascular cambium and the phellogen. Upon cell division and differentiation, several types of cells develop from the vascular cambium and the phellogen including secondary xylem (wood) and phellem (cork), respectively. As an example of our work on secondary growth, a mechanism for controlling the homeostasis of a specific polyamine (thermospermine) which regulates xylem differentiation will be presented.
