Title: Gut microbiota (counter)-selects for antibiotic resistant strains at a personalized manner

Speaker: Michael Knopp

From: EMBL

Abstract: Michael Knopp received his PhD in 2018 from Uppsala University, Sweden, under the supervision of Dan I. Andersson, where he investigated the evolutionary mechanisms driving the development and maintenance of antibiotic resistance in bacterial pathogens. His research focused on how resistance impacts bacterial physiology, how bacteria compensate for associated fitness costs, and how resistance genes can emerge de novo. Currently a postdoctoral researcher in the Typas lab at EMBL in Heidelberg, Germany, he explores how biotic and abiotic factors—such as microbiome composition and environmental compounds—affect the fitness of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. By combining high-throughput screening with microbiome-informed approaches, he identifies and characterizes factors that shape resistance dynamics in complex environments.
