GREEN-IT researchers distinguished at the 4th International Legume Society Conference
Last week, Carlota Vaz Patto, GREEN-IT member and PI of the Genetics and Genomics of Plant Complex Traits (PlantX) lab was awarded honorary member of the International Legume Society (ILS) for her contribution to the legume research community. The PI has been focused on comprehending the genetic basis of agronomical complex traits (such as disease resistance, drought tolerance and quality of legume crops) and creating tools that increase the efficiency of the selection process for plant improvement, through a multidisciplinary integrative approach that involves also the direct end-users (industry and farmers). Carlota joins researchers Christophe Salon (INRAE - Institut National de Recherche pour l’Agriculture, l’Alimentation et l’Environnement), Bogdan Wolko (Polish Academy of Sciences), and Diego Rubiales (Instituto de Agricultura Sostenible-CSIC), who were also distinguished as honorary members of ILS.
During the event, PlantX PhD student Matilde Sanches also received a best oral presentation award for her talk on “GWAS as a stalwart agent in the endeavor to understanding water stress resilience in grain legumes”.
The 4th International Legume Society Conference took place in Granada, from September 19 – 22, gathering researchers and stakeholders interested in promoting greater cultivation and use of grain and forage legumes, as a necessary path towards more sustainable food and feed systems and healthier diets. Several GREEN-IT members from PlantX lab and iPlantMicro lab were present and showcased their work at the 4-day event.
