The Macromolecular Crystallography Unit (MX Unit) at ITQB NOVA, coordinated by Professor Maria Arménia Carrondo, is a top research group that aims the study and characterization of biological molecules, such as proteins and nucleic acids, to a resolution higher enough to help elucidating the detailed mechanisms by which these macromolecules carry out their functions in living cells and organisms. Our scientific projects are quite diverse and are mainly Health-related.
The MXU works in 5 different field of research:
• Structural Genomics Lab (PI: Maria Arménia Carrondo)
o Protection Mechanisms against Oxidative Stress (Célia Romão)
o Sulphur Metabolism (João Vicente)
o DNA Repair (Elin Moe)
• Structural Biology Lab (PI: Carlos Frazão)
• Industry and Medicine Applied Crystallography Lab (PI: Pedro Matias)
• Structural Virology Lab (PI: Colin McVey)
• Membrane Protein Crystallography Lab (PI: Margarida Archer)
The MX-Unit combines structural biology methodologies, such as X-ray crystallography and SAXs, to determine the three-dimensional structures of molecules.
Moreover we are also building our expertise and knowledge on Cryo-Electron Microscopy (Cryo-EM) through the European Horizon 2020 project IMpaCT – Imaging Life from Molecules to Cells, which is coordinated by two PIs from our Unit, Pedro Matias and Célia Romão.
We have established collaboration with three research Centres with proven track record and expertise in the methodology and applications of Cryo-EM: the José Maria Carazo team from the National Centre for Biotechnology of the Spanish Research Council (Spain); the Sarah Butcher team at the University from Helsinki (Finland), and the Michael Elbaum and Sharon Wolf team from the Weizmann Institute of Science (Israel).
