The University of Helsinki is the oldest and largest institution of academic education in Finland, an international scientific community of 40,000 students and researchers. In international university rankings, the University of Helsinki typically ranks among the top 100. The University of Helsinki (UH) has over 7,500 staff, of which over 4,600 are teaching and research staff, 50% are women. There are 4470 PhD students. In 2016 10,500 publications were produced at UH (62% are of peer-reviewed academic publications with international cooperation) and an additional 132 invention disclosures, patent application and patents were filed. UH belongs to the League of European Research Universities. UH participates actively in H2020. UH hosts 20 National Centers of Excellence (out of total 29). UH leads the National infrastructure for structural cell biology in Finland called INSTRUCT-FI. It works with 5 other Finnish Biocentres to provide extensive research infrastructures across the life sciences. This activity has supported around 60 ERC scientists in UH, Academy Professors, Academy Centres of Excellence and Nordic Centres of Excellence. The INSTRUCT-FI mission is to promote quantitative analysis within the biological scientific community, to ensure that the investments are widely used, and that advanced structural biology research is promoted in Finland and within the wider European Community for instance through participation in EU programmes such as H2020 iNEXT. Finland is a member country in the Instruct-ERIC.
