Selected highlights:
- Vaccination is the most efficient strategy to prevent and control the spread of infectious diseases
- The manufacturing process of new-generation vaccines is simpler and faster, when compared to traditional vaccines. There is a need to develop robust, large-scale processes to ensure both vaccine quality and safety.
- In response to a pandemic, it was possible to license vaccines for human use in record time. However, shortening vaccines’ development time did not interfere with the quality of effectiveness or safety assessments.
- It was a collaborative and global effort of scientists, engineers, doctors, nurses and the pharmaceutical industry that enabled the vaccination of millions of people in record time.
- The greatest challenge will be producing and delivering billions of vaccines to every location around the world, including remote places. Flexible vaccination platforms will be essential to tailor vaccines to different geographies and populations.
