Paula Alves, CEO of iBET, was interviewed on the national radio show “Imperdíveis” of Observador about her career path and the recent election as international member of the US National Academy of Engineering.

Selected interview highlights:

• The nomination for the US National Academy of Engineering was possible thanks to the support of special teachers who guided me in this path, like Professor Manuel Carrondo and Professor Helena Santos, my students, my team and, mainly, with the unconditional support of my family.
• While pursuing my PhD, I studied on Norway, England and Germany. I always encourage my students to study abroad as this is a true growing experience, not only in Science but also as a person.
• A scientist is a citizen of the world, especially in Biotechnology, because science is multidisciplinary and requires complementary skills. This election shows that Portugal is a global player.
• As an engineer, I’m a problem-solver: I distance myself from the problem, look around and apply the tools needed to solve it
