Paula Alves is member of the EURL ECVAM – JRC’s European Union Reference Laboratory for alternatives to animal testing – Scientific Advisory Committee.
The members of the Scientific Advisory Commitee of EURL ECVAM are appointed as a result from their scientific excellence. As part of the Scientific Advisory Committee, Paula Alves is responsible for the assessment of the scientific validity of studies on alternatives to animal testing.
EURL ECVAM is part of the Joint Research Centre (JRC), the science and knowledge service of the European Commission. The main expertise area of EURL ECVAM is the development, validation and regulatory acceptance of alternative-to-animal methods and approaches and their dissemination.
Current activities of EURL ECVAM are thus aimed to support the Replacement, Reduction and Refinement (the Three Rs) of animal procedures and include:
- conducting research and collaborating in EU and international research initiatives;
- coordination and undertaking of validation studies of alternative methods for the safety assessment of chemicals;
- dissemination of information about the Three Rs;
- promotion of alternative methods and the Three Rs in an international context.
The Scientific Advisory Committee members gather on an as-needed basis. The last meeting took place at the Joint Research Centre in Ispra on December 2nd.
