90 segundos de Ciência awarded with the 2019 Gulbenkian Knowledge prize
The daily radio show "90 Segundos de Ciência" is the winner of the Gulbenkian 2019 Knowledge prize. The prize, with a monetary value of 50 000 euros, is attributed by the Gulbenkian Foundation, and celebrates projects that contribute with technologies for learning. The award ceremony takes place next Friday, 19 July, at the Gulbenkian Foundation, in the presence of President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa.
The show has aired for three years, and is a platform for scientists to communicate their work to the public. As the mark of 700 programmes approaches, the programme has become a repository for Portuguese science, creating a database of scientists in all areas and their work. It is an outcome of the Master in Science Communication run by ITQB NOVA and Faculdade de Ciências Sociais e Humanas (NOVA FCSH) – the two Units from Universidade Nova de Lisboa which produce the show in cooperation with Antena 1 and with the support of Novartis and Santander Universidades.
"We couldn't be happier. This project has been an incredible journey for sharing many of the science stories happening in Portuguese and introducing the protagonists of those stories. And there is so much more to tell…", says Joana Lobo Antunes, one of the coordinators of the programme.
"We are very proud of this partnership with NOVA FCSH, Antena 1, Novartis and Santander Universidades, and to have been hosting this project since the beginning and contributing to the increase of scientific literacy by showing the research we are doing in Portugal”, said Cláudio M. Soares, ITQB NOVA Dean. “We congratulate the team for the Prize.”
The programme airs every day at 18h58 and repeats the next day at 10h58, Monday to Friday. Each program is also on air daily through RDP Internacional and RDP África, taking Portuguese science to all parts of the world. All programs are available online at RTP Play and 90 Segundos de Ciência dedicated website, where more multimedia material about the projects and the researchers can be found.
