Plants are fascinating. They come in all colors and shapes, with different characteristics which range from ornamental to having medical properties. To celebrate them, the International Fascination of Plants Day was launched by the European Plant Science Organization. This celebration on 18 May 2021 aims to awaken the largest number of people to the truly fascinating world of plants, raising awareness for the importance of their study. From the improvement of agriculture to the sustainable production of food, horticulture, forestry, and the production of non-food goods (paper, wood, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, and energy), without forgetting environmental conservation, plants and their importance are transversal in our lives.
This year, ITQB NOVA joined forces with several partners (CIB, ANSEME, iBET, GREEN-IT & InnovPlantProtect) to organize a full day of activities, where there will be something for everyone. Put 18 May on your agenda and come with us to the Fascinating world of plants.
If you like to draw, don't miss the Scientific Illustration Workshop - Rabiscos em casa will take place from 2 PM to 3 PM (Lisbon time - GMT+1). The workshop will be a dedicated class in which anyone can learn to draw the plants they have nearby. Live to your home or backyard, scientific illustrator Luísa Cristótomo will share the tools necessary to know how to observe and transmit to paper the fascinating details of the plants that surround us. This activity is organized by ITQB NOVA and GREEN-IT, with the support of the Municipality of Oeiras.

Does the food we eat actually come from nature? This will be the question explored in a debate, moderated by journalist Luís Ribeiro, which will include representatives from different areas, in a multidisciplinary panel composed of nutrition specialist Conceição Calhau, farmer Gabriela Cruz, researcher Pedro Fevereiro, and gastronomy professional José Maria Moreira. This activity is organized by ITQB NOVA, CIB, IBET, Green-it, InnovPlantProtect, and ANSEME.

May 18 will also be the day of the grand opening of the PlantLabSketching virtual exhibition! “PlantLab Sketching” is an Art & Science itinerant exhibition of drawings produced in the context of an urban sketching activity organized in the Open Day 2017 of ITQB NOVA. It will now be available to everyone all over the world, with a 3D virtual tour, which will premiere on the Fascination of Plants Day. The original exhibition was organized by ITQB NOVA, CiB - Centro de Informação de Biotecnologia and the Foto & Sketchers 2 group. More soon.
On this day it will even be possible to take a guided tour of the plant life in Estação Agronómica Nacional, in a face-to-face activity guided by ITQB NOVA and GREEN- IT researcher Ana Fortunato, for a limited number of people and according to all the safety rules. Finally, the children at the “Grãos de Gente – Associação de Desenvolvimento Infantil” are already having fun with scientific protocols shared by ITQB NOVA/iBET/GREEN-IT researchers. Over the course of some weeks, the children of four different classes will learn how rice and bean germinate and register how this growth is affected by different conditions, like real scientists. By 18 may they will have shared pictures, drawings, and other records of these fascinating experiments with plants we know so well from our day-to-day lives, so stay around for more.
These events are organized with the support of the Municipality of Oeiras and are also a pre-event of the European Researchers Night - Reggae.
In Portugal, the initiative is coordinated by the Portuguese Society of Plant Physiology and ITQB NOVA, with events being organized by institutions all over the country. Discover these initiatives and have a Fascinating Day:

Title: A full day of events at Escola de Ciências da Universidade do Minho
Escola de Ciências da Universidade do Minho joins this celebration of the fascination of plants, with a diversified program of activities, prepared to bring the wonderful world of plants to pre-school, elementary and high school students, as well as to the general public. The youngest will be able to participate in the contest 'Who can bloom better?', with creative works that illustrate all the beauty, diversity, and magic of flowers. These works will be the object of a virtual exhibition, which will be premiered on the International Day of Fascination for Plants. The program for the day also includes the SolanArt virtual gallery, with illustrations representing species of the botanical family Solanaceae, present in the Portuguese and/or Brazilian flora; the sculpture exhibition 'The Book: an obsolete illusory', with works, that the pre-school children of the Colégio D. Pedro V (Braga) produced, based on a reflection on the importance of trees as raw material in the origin of the book; the virtual exhibition 'Looms of Nature', prepared by students of pre-school education and 1st cycle of the same school, presenting a selection of works of art that will be displayed in the virtual gallery; and also the stage reading of 'Harvested Leaves', performed by the students and 4th-grade teacher, also from Colégio D. Pedro V, with illustrations developed with eco-art techniques using sustainable natural materials such as earth, stone, leaves or branches.
But there's more! High school students will learn that there is a diversity of microorganisms growing inside plants and their importance, as well as how to distinguish species with male and female flowers and the importance of the study of genes in understanding the reproductive success and productivity of these species. For the students of the 1st and 2nd cycle, the difference between the "bad" microbes, which cause plant diseases and are often visible on fruit, and the "good" microbes in agriculture will be explained. At the end of the afternoon, the lecture 'Plants on...TOP!', with Isabel Aguiar Pinto Mina, professor at the Department of Biology of the School of Sciences of UMinho, will address the importance of plants in natural terrestrial landscapes and the contribution that green coverings may provide in the naturalization of urban landscapes.

Title: Medicinal Fruits – why these beautiful plant organs must be an essential part of our diets
Fruits are being increasingly used to treat diseases and alleviate their symptoms. Patents have been developed regarding their medicinal use. But what is present in fruits that makes them essential in a healthy lifestyle?
In this activity, we will go through the phenotypic diversity of fruits worldwide and their medicinal use. From Vaccinium macrocarpon, the American cranberry that is efficient in treating urinary tract infections to Opuntia spp., commonly called prickly pear, that diminishes triglycerides and cholesterol. The mysterious secondary compounds present in fruits will be revealed and quantified. Which fruit has higher antioxidant capacity? What about easy recipes to treat common health problems by using fruits? Fruits are indeed fascinating. We will end our journey with a tour through paintings depicting fruits.

Title: Virtual Visit to Estufa Fria
The story of Estufa Fria de Lisboa began at the turn of the 19th to the 20th century and started by chance, which quickly turned into a great dream and a great project for the capital. It is an almost secret garden in the center of Lisbon, in the shape of a greenhouse, which includes in its mission the awareness of the value of plants, with a view to the adoption of behaviors that promote the conservation of biodiversity, in a strategy of sustainability.
Thus, we invite you to be guided on this virtual visit to Estufa Fria, where we can find three different environments: cold greenhouse, warm greenhouse, and sweet greenhouse, with about 300 species from several continents. Watch the virtual tour here.

Title: “Plants fascinate us, but... not all plants are great anywhere!"
Plants are amazing living things! They sustain our life and that of so many other beings! However, when removed from their natural areas of distribution (i.e., when they are introduced as exotic species), a small portion of these plant species have the ability to reveal invasive behavior, escaping man's control and causing many problems. In fact, biological invasions (including by plants) are considered the 5th major threat to biodiversity globally, jeopardizing the balance of ecosystems and promoting high economic and public health losses. There is even a Target (15.8) of the Sustainable Development Goals that focuses on reducing the introduction and reducing the impact of invasive alien species on ecosystems and controlling them in priority areas. Still, it is worth pointing out that many exotic plants have positive effects (e.g., they are part of our food, filling many of our gardens and orchards, beautifying our gardens and parks, serving as raw material for many of the things we have in our homes), and that only a part becomes invasive. The worst is that these cause serious problems! Besides these imbalances - these ways of growing so much that they cause problems, which allow some of the exotic plants to reveal invasive behavior in the new places where they are taken - there are often fantastic characteristics of the species themselves that never cease to fascinate us. For example, the production of gigantic amounts of seeds, seed banks that instead of accumulating in the soil accumulate in the plants, fascinating strategies for seeds to be dispersed effectively using us and other animals, astonishing vegetative reproduction capabilities, loss of interactions with animals, etc. This webinar - which we think will be fascinating - will be about these invasive plants and their characteristics. Title: Chasing Elvas Municipal Garden’s fascinating trees
InnovPlantProtect (InPP) is organizing a paper chase game in Elvas Municipal Garden, for local 10th graders to explore, identify and marvel at the garden’s diverse trees and their differentiating characteristics. Put together with D. Sancho II Secondary School, this event, with which the Municipality of Elvas associates itself, will take place in the morning. The Municipal Garden is the biggest green space in this small city of the Alentejo region where InPP is based. It holds specimens of Judas trees, lime trees, olive trees, cedars, orange trees, horse chestnut trees, mulberry trees, Casuarina, ash trees and carob trees, among many others. The activity will start at 8:30 AM and will be divided into 3 (three) 90-minutes time slots, for three different 10th grade classes from D. Sancho II School: 8:30 – 10 AM / 10 – 11:30 AM / 11:30 AM – 1 PM. InPP researchers and teachers from the school will be on site to assist the participants. A different class, from the audiovisuals area, shall also participate, reporting on the event. At a later date, a similar activity shall be proposed to the class from the professional technical course in mixed farming.
The theme of Biodiversity is taught in the 10th grade in Portugal. As a result of this activity, InPP, D. Sancho II Secondary School and the municipality of Elvas will continue collaborating to develop a physical signing system for the trees, with respective common names, scientific names and a QR code. The QR code, once read by a visitor’s smartphone, will give access to a complete data base about the trees of the Municipal Garden, including their identification, description, curiosities, history and mythology. This data base/ digital brochure is to be built by InPP researchers and the school’s students and teachers, and made available to the Municipality and all its secondary schools, in a project that should last until 2022. The AIAR association is organizing an urban sketching activity on May 18, at 6 PM, in the Elvas Municipal Garden, in celebration of Fascination of Plants Day. This event is part of the commemoration organized by InnovPlantProtect and D. Sancho II Secondary School, with the support of the Municipality of Elvas. AIAR (mirror of the word RAIA, Portuguese term for border) ADC is a non-profit association, whose goal is to promote local development through crucial resort to Culture, Heritage, and Nature, as socio-economic and environmental progress vectors of Alentejo’s “raia”.

Title: The Fascination of Plants at Gulbenkian Institute of Science: scientists in the laboratory and at home
The Gulbenkian Institute of Science (IGC) joins the International Fascination of Plants Day celebrations with a digital offer for all ages. If you are curious to know more about the importance of doing scientific research on plants for the sustainability of the planet and the infrastructures that allow this research, we invite you to watch a short video with scientist Paula Duque. This video uses 3D technology, allowing the visitor to explore a plant growth chamber by moving the video image in any direction. The youngest will also be challenged to discover what conditions are necessary for the development and growth of plants, through experiments that can be done at home, following two episodes of the “Cientistas em Casa” series. These multimedia resources are available only in Portuguese.

Title: WEBINAR| NUTS FROM ALENTEJO – The Contribution of Science to the Sustainability in the sector
The Technology Transfer Centre from CEBAL (CTT-CEBAL), within the framework of its mission to disseminate knowledge and transfer technology in Ferreira, do Alentejo territory, a collaboration with Ferreira do Alentejo City Council, is promoting the webinar "NUTS FROM ALENTEJO – The Contribution of Science to the Sustainability in the sector", in the scope of the celebration of Fascination of Plants Day 2021, which will be held on the 21st of May 2021, online.
The webinar aims to be a place of interface between research and farmers, where several national researchers and knowledge promotion agents intend to demonstrate how the results generated in Research can contribute to the sustainability of the nut sector in Alentejo, namely almond and walnut.
The themes in the webinar will explore the role of knowledge and technology transfer on the nuts setor, namely the characterization of the nuts culture in Ferreira do Alentejo territory, molecular biology tools for high phytosanitary quality tree fruits, and agronomic and sustainable strategies for higher orchard productivities with preserved environmental biodiversity.

Para as celebrar, o Dia Internacional do Fascínio das Plantas foi lançado pela EPSO. Esta celebração visa despertar o maior número de pessoas para o mundo verdadeiramente fascinante das plantas, sensibilizando-as para a importância do seu estudo. Desde a melhoria da agricultura à produção sustentável de alimentos, horticultura, silvicultura e produção de bens não alimentares (papel, madeira, produtos químicos, farmacêuticos e energia), sem esquecer a conservação ambiental, as plantas e a sua importância são transversais nas nossas vidas.

A "PlantLab Sketching" é uma exposição itinerante de Arte e Ciência, produzida no contexto de uma actividade de "urban sketching" organizada para o Dia Aberto do ITQB NOVA de 2017. Estará agora disponível para todo o mundo, com uma visita virtual em 3D, que irá estrear neste Dia do Fascínio das Plantas. Título: A Escola de Ciências da UMinho propõe um concurso, exposições, demonstrações e palestra para todos
A Escola de Ciências da Universidade do Minho junta-se a esta celebração do fascínio das plantas, com um programa de atividades diversificado, preparado para fazer chegar o maravilhoso mundo das plantas aos alunos do ensino pré-escolar, básico e secundário e ao público em geral.
Os mais novos poderão participar no concurso ‘Quem consegue florir melhor?’, com trabalhos criativos que ilustrem toda a beleza, diversidade e magia das flores. Estes trabalhos serão objeto de uma exposição virtual, que será divulgada no Dia Internacional do Fascínio das Plantas.
O programa prevê ainda: a galeria virtual SolanArt, que integra ilustrações representando espécies da família botânica Solanaceae presentes na flora portuguesa e/ou brasileira; a exposição de escultura ‘O Livro: um ilusório obsoleto’, com trabalhos que as crianças do ensino pré-escolar do Colégio D. Pedro V (Braga) elaboraram, partindo de uma reflexão sobre a importância das árvores, enquanto matéria-prima na origem do livro; a exposição virtual ‘Teares de Natureza’, elaborada pelos alunos do ensino pré-escolar e do 1.º ciclo do mesmo Colégio, apresentando pequenos teares com plantas e cartão reciclado, utilizando técnicas de Ecoarte; e a leitura encenada ‘Folhas Colhidas’, protagonizada pelos alunos e professora do 4º ano, também do Colégio D. Pedro V, com recurso à ilustração, desenvolvida com técnicas de Ecoarte utilizando materiais naturais sustentáveis, tais como terra, pedra, folhas ou ramos.
Mais há mais! Os alunos do ensino secundário poderão aprender que há uma diversidade de microrganismos a crescer dentro das plantas e a sua importância, bem como a distinguir espécies com flores femininas e masculinas e a importância do estudo dos genes na compreensão do sucesso reprodutivo e na produtividade destas espécies. Já aos alunos do 1º e 2º ciclo será explicada a diferença entre os micróbios “maus”, causadores das doenças nas plantas e muitas vezes visíveis nos frutos, e os micróbios “bons” na agricultura.
No final da tarde, a palestra ‘Plants on…TOP!’, com Isabel Aguiar Pinto Mina, docente no Departamento de Biologia da Escola de Ciências da UMinho, irá abordar a importância das plantas nas paisagens terrestres naturais e o contributo que as coberturas verdes poderão prestar na naturalização de paisagens urbanas.

Título: Frutos medicinais - porque é que estes belos órgãos vegetais devem ser uma parte essencial das nossas dietas
Os frutos são cada vez mais utilizados para tratar doenças e aliviar os seus sintomas. Foram desenvolvidas patentes relativas ao seu uso medicinal. Mas o que está presente nos frutos que os torna essenciais para um estilo de vida saudável?
Nesta atividade, vamos analisar a diversidade fenotípica dos frutos em todo o mundo e o seu uso medicinal. Do Vaccinium macrocarpon, o arando americano que é eficiente no tratamento de infecções do tracto urinário, até Opuntia spp., vulgarmente chamada pêra espinhosa, que diminui os triglicéridos e o colesterol. Os misteriosos compostos secundários presentes nas frutas serão revelados e quantificados. Que fruta tem maior capacidade antioxidante? E as receitas fáceis de tratar problemas de saúde comuns através da utilização de frutos? As frutas são de facto fascinantes. Terminaremos a nossa viagem com um passeio por pinturas que retratam estes alimentos.

Neste seminário durante a tarde (14-16h GMT) com demonstração, restrita a 20 pessoas após registo, irá explorar-se a medicação à base de plantas. Medicamento à base de plantas é qualquer medicamento que tenha exclusivamente como substâncias activas uma ou mais substâncias derivadas de plantas, uma ou mais preparações à base de plantas ou uma ou mais substâncias derivadas de plantas em associação com uma ou mais preparações à base de plantas de acordo com a regulamentação. Este evento com palestras, posters e demonstrações tem o objetivo de dar a conhecer melhor o que são os medicamentos à base de plantas.

A história da Estufa Fria de Lisboa tem início na passagem do séc. XIX para o séc. XX e começa por um acaso, que rapidamente se transforma num grande sonho e num grande projeto para a capital. Trata-se de um, quase secreto, jardim em pleno centro de Lisboa, em forma de estufa, que integra na sua Missão a sensibilização para o valor das plantas , com vista à adoção de comportamentos promotores da conservação da biodiversidade, numa estratégia de sustentabilidade.

Título: “As plantas fascinam-nos, mas... nem todas se portam bem em todo o lado!"

As plantas são seres vivos incríveis! Mantêm a nossa vida (e a de tantos outros seres vivos!) e sem elas não conseguimos viver. No entanto, quando retiradas das suas áreas de distribuição natural (i.e., quando são colocada na situação de exóticas), uma pequena parte dessas espécies de plantas têm a capacidade de revelar comportamento invasor, fugindo ao controlo do Homem e causando muitos problemas. De facto, as invasões biológicas (incluindo por plantas) são consideradas a 5ª principal ameaça à biodiversidade a nível global, pondo em causa o equilíbrio dos ecossistemas e promovendo prejuízos elevados a nível económico e na saúde pública. Há mesmo uma Meta (a 15.8) dos Objetivos de Desenvolvimento Sustentável que se foca em diminuir a introdução e reduzir o impacte das espécies exóticas invasoras nos ecossistemas e controlá-las em áreas prioritárias. Ainda assim, vale a pena sublinhar que muitas plantas exóticas têm efeitos positivos (e.g., fazem parte da nossa alimentação preenchendo muitas das nossas hortas e pomares, embelezam os nossos jardins e parques, servem de matéria prima para muitas das coisas que temos nas nossas casas), e que apenas uma parte se torna invasora. O pior é que essas causam problemas graves!
Por detrás destes desequilíbrios, destas formas de crescer tanto que causam problemas, que permitem que algumas das plantas exóticas revelem comportamento invasor nos novos locais para onde são levadas, estão muitas vezes características fantásticas das próprias espécies que não deixam de nos fascinar. Por exemplo, produção de quantidades gigantescas de sementes, bancos de sementes que em vez de se acumularem no solo se acumulam nas plantas, estratégias fascinantes para as sementes serem dispersas eficazmente servindo-se de nós e de outros animais, capacidades de reprodução vegetativa assombrosas, perdas de interações com animais, etc. É sobre estas plantas invasoras e suas características que vamos falar durante o webinar – parece-nos que vai ser fascinante. Título: À descoberta das árvores fascinantes do Jardim Municipal de Elvas
O InnovPlantProtect (InPP) vai organizar um peddy-paper no Jardim Municipal de Elvas destinado a alunos do 10. º ano do concelho, para que explorem, identifiquem e se maravilhem com as diferentes árvores do jardim e respetivas características diferenciadoras.
Realizado em conjunto com a Escola Secundária D. Sancho II, Agrupamento de Escolas n.º 3 de Elvas, este evento, ao qual a Câmara Municipal de Elvas (CME) se associa, realiza-se na manhã do dia 18 de maio de 2021, Dia do Fascínio das Plantas. O Jardim Municipal de Elvas é o maior espaço verde desta cidade do Alentejo, onde o InPP está sediado. Lá se encontram espécimes de olaias, tílias, oliveiras, cedros, laranjeiras, castanheiros-da-índia, amoreiras, casuarinas, freixos e alfarrobeiras, entre muitas outras. A atividade tem início às 8h30 e será dividida em três sessões de 90 minutos cada, para três turmas do 10.º ano da Escola Secundária D. Sancho II: das 8h30 às 10h, das 10h às 11h30, e das 11h30 às 13h. Investigadores do InPP e professores da Escola estarão no local para assistirem os participantes. Uma outra turma, da área de audiovisuais, deverá participar, efetuando a reportagem do evento. Numa data posterior, uma atividade similar será proposta à turma do curso técnico-profissional de agropecuária.
O tema da Biodiversidade é abordado durante o 10.º ano de escolaridade. Como resultado desta atividade, o InPP, a Escola Secundária D. Sancho II e a CME continuarão a colaborar no desenvolvimento de um sistema físico de placas de identificação para as árvores do Jardim, com os respetivos nomes comuns, científicos e um código QR (Quick Response).
Este código QR, uma vez lido pelo smartphone de um visitante, permitirá aceder a uma base de dados sobre as árvores do Jardim Municipal de Elvas, onde se inclui a respetiva identificação, descrição, curiosidades, história e mitologia. Esta base/ brochura digital será criada pelos investigadores do InPP e os alunos e professores da Escola, e disponibilizada à CME e a todas as escolas secundárias do concelho de Elvas, num projeto que deverá estender-se até 2022.
A associação AIAR promove no dia 18 de maio, às 18h, uma atividade de urban sketching no Jardim Municipal de Elvas, no âmbito das celebrações do Dia Internacional do Fascínio das Plantas. Esta ação insere-se nas comemorações organizadas pelo InnovPlantProtect e pela Escola Secundária D. Sancho II, a que a Câmara Municipal de Elvas se associa. A AIAR (espelho da palavra RAIA) ADC é uma associação sem fins lucrativos, que pretende promover o desenvolvimento local através do recurso fundamental à Cultura, ao Património e à Natureza, como vectores do progresso sócio-economico e ambiental da Raia Alentejana.

Título: O Fascínio das Plantas no Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência: cientistas no laboratório e em casa
O Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência (IGC) junta-se às celebrações do Dia Internacional do Fascínio das Plantas com uma oferta digital para todas as idades. Se tem curiosidade em perceber melhor a importância de se fazer investigação científica em plantas para a sustentabilidade do planeta e conhecer as infraestruturas que permitem essa investigação, pode assistir a um curto vídeo com a cientista Paula Duque. Este vídeo recorre a tecnologia 3D, permitindo ao visitante explorar a câmara de crescimento de plantas, ao deslocar a imagem do vídeo em qualquer direção. Os mais novos são ainda desafiados a fazerem experiências em casa para descobrirem quais as condições necessárias ao desenvolvimento e crescimento das plantas, através de dois episódios da série “Cientistas em Casa”.

Título: FRUTOS SECOS DO ALENTEJO – O Contributo da Ciência para a Sustentabilidade do Sector
O Centro de Transferência de Tecnologia (CTT) do CEBAL, no âmbito da sua ação de disseminação do conhecimento e transferência de tecnologia no território de Ferreira do Alentejo, em parceria com a Câmara Municipal de Ferreira do Alentejo, está a organizar o Seminário: " FRUTOS SECOS DO ALENTEJO – O Contributo da Contributo da Ciência para a Sustentabilidade do Sector ", que decorrerá no dia 21 de Maio 2021, pelas 14h, em plataforma digital.
O Seminário, que pretende ser uma interface entre a investigação e o tecido produtivo, contará com investigadores e agentes de promoção do conhecimento nacionais que pretendem demonstrar como os resultados gerados na Investigação podem contribuir para o desenvolvimento económico da fileira dos frutos secos no Alentejo, nomeadamente da amêndoa e noz.
Os temas do webinar irão explorar o papel da transferência de conhecimento e tecnologia no sector da dos frutos secos, nomeadamente a caracterização da cultura no território de Ferreira do Alentejo, ferramentas biotecnológicas para árvores de elevada qualidade fitossanitária e estratégias agronómicas e sustentáveis para maior produtividade dos pomares com biodiversidade ambiental preservada. A sessão é dirigida a produtores e empresários relacionados com a fileira; empreendedores, investigadores, estudantes e todos aqueles que tiverem interesse no tema.
