In Memory of Professor Joan Guinovart (1947–2024)

Professor Guinovart’s groundbreaking research in carbohydrate metabolism, his leadership in founding the Institute for Research in Biomedicine (IRB Barcelona), and his service in international scientific organizations have left an indelible mark on the field. His contributions to ITQB NOVA, marked by strategic vision and a deep understanding of the scientific enterprise, have been invaluable.

Cláudio M. Soares, Coordinator of the Research Unit MOSTMICRO-ITQB, fondly remembers Joan Guinovart, "Joan will be deeply missed by many, including me. He was one of my few trusted mentors, offering invaluable guidance since I invited him to join the Scientific Advisory Board of MOSTMICRO-ITQB. His insights greatly influenced our research and organizational strategies. Joan was a kind yet direct advisor, with a sharp mind and a delightful sense of humor that enriched every interaction.” Inês Cardoso Pereira, Coordinator of the LS4FUTURE Associated Laboratory also remarked “Joan was a very active member of our SAB who always gave us very wise and insightful suggestions. We will dearly miss him.”

More than his scientific achievements, Professor Guinovart will be remembered for his warmth, accessibility, and commitment to mentoring future generations of scientists. His example of combining scientific excellence withhuman connection will continue to inspire us all.
