Júlia Costa among women scientists honored by Ciência Viva
Oeiras, 8th March 2025
Júlia Costa, head of the Glycobiology laboratory at ITQB NOVA, is the latest researcher from the institute to be honored by Ciência Viva, featuring in the book “Mulheres na Ciência” (in English, “Women in Science”). She joins 11 other ITQB NOVA scientists previously highlighted in this initiative, which since 2015 celebrates Portuguese women making significant contributions to Science and Technology.
"My main interest is biochemistry and my focus is on protein glycosylation in cells and organisms, its regulation and importance as a therapeutic target and biomarker for diseases. In research, I am attracted to the method of shedding light on what is less clear, the curiosity that leads to discovery and the open but critical spirit to always learn more", Júlia Costa said to Ciência Viva.
The 5th volume of the book was launched on March 8th, 2025, International Women's Day, at Pavilhão do Conhecimento. This edition presents 107 portraits of researchers from 65 institutions across over 30 scientific fields, captured by photographers Estela Silva, Lara Jacinto, Leonel Castro, and Mário Cruz.
Past editions have also highlighted ITQB NOVA researchers Cecília Arraiano, Claudina Rodrigues-Pousada, Cristina Silva Pereira, Helena Santos, Hermínia de Lencastre, Inês Cardoso Pereira, Isabel Rocha, Margarida Oliveira, Maria Arménia Carrondo, Mariana Pinho, and Paula Alves.
