Planeta ITQB
Turning Waste into Science
| |
| ITQB is a large research institute also dedicated to advanced training. About 350 researchers work at ITQB in a diverse array of scientific areas so as to contribute to the understating of life’s mechanisms and ultimately benefit the whole society. Organisms, cells and molecules are studied in detail making use of the large research infrastructure available on site. Scientific research and technological breakthroughs require money. The high quality of ITQB research is mirrored in its success to competitively secure funds from national and international R&D funding agencies. Making efficient use of resources means more funds can be allocated to scientific research itself. ITQB has always been committed to using its resources efficiently in a number of ways, from energy saving strategies to a well-organized purchase management of reagents and equipment. Now, we want to do more and turn waste into science. |
|
| ITQB consumes over 6,000,000 kWh of electricity every year. This is equivalent to 2,000 times average home consumption and represents over 4,000 tons of CO2 per year. About 10,000 trees are needed throughout all their lives to sequester all this carbon. It is clear that ITQB needs electricity to conduct its research. Still, we believe that by making small changes every day we can save money and reduce our carbon footprint. This is the ITQB energy challenge for the coming year. Part of the savings will fund a young researcher's "blue" project. |
